Cultural Outreach

The Alaska Native Heritage Center brings cultural representatives to your school to share the rich and diverse cultures of Alaska.  Shavila is a 45-minute all-school assembly that offers a sample of the programs available at the Heritage Center.  It is an excellent introduction for classes preparing for a visit to the Center.

Shavila Assembly: A Rainbow of Alaska Native Cultures

Shavila (pronounced sha-vée-lah) is a Dena’ina Athabascan word meaning “rainbow.” A Shavila assembly introduces your school to the diversity of Alaska Native cultures and the Alaska Native Heritage Center School Visit Program. A storyteller will entertain with tales that have been passed on for generations. An Alaska Native dancer will perform and explain traditional Native dances. An athlete will demonstrate and teach techniques relating to the various World Eskimo Indian Olympic and Native Youth Olympic events.

Recommended for all grades.
The assembly is 45 minutes long.
The number of students attending a performance depends on the size of your gathering space.
2 performances are suggested for larger schools, one for Grades K-3, the other for Grades 4-6.

Cost: FREE for the entire school year!

Shavila is available only in the Anchorage area on the following dates:

  • October 4, 2010 - April 22, 2011
  • Tuesday - Friday 1:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. (45 min presentation)  3:15 p.m. is the latest time a Shavila may be scheduled.
