
Master Artist Classes
Learn from Master Alaska Native Artists in these 2 week long classes featuring painting, beading, sewing, weaving and more! ANHC is able to offer these classes at affordable prices thanks to generous donations and grants from ExxonMobil and the US Department of Education.
Master Artists Schedule 2007-08
Now in its eighth year, this popular series of workshops offers instruction from Alaska Native master artists. Each workshop offers the opportunity to learn a traditional Alaska Native art form from a recognized expert.
Yup’ik Mask Carving with Percy Avugiak
(Maximum class size: 15)
October 16 through October 19, 2007, 6 to 9 p.m.
October 20, 2007 noon to 4 p.m.
October 23 through 26, 2007, 6 to 9 p.m.
October 27, 2007, noon to 4 p.m.
Cost: $200/$180 for ANHC members.
Born in Bethel, Percy Avugiak has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Alaska Fairbanks with an emphasis on painting. In this workshop, he will teach participants the design and crafting of Yup’ik-style masks.

Inupiaq Mukluk Making with Willy Topkok
(Maximum class size: 15)November 6 through November 9, 2007, 6 to 9 p.m.

November 17, 2007 noon to 4 p.m.
Cost: $300/$270 for ANHC members.
Willy Topkok is from the villages of Wales and Teller. He learned the art of sewing from his grandmother, and the art of ivory carving from his father. In this class, participants learn the skill of making mukluks Inupiaq-style. They will construct their own tool for molding the soles, and will then create and sew the tops to the leggings and soles.

Athabascan Beaded Gloves with Karen Refredi

Cost: $250/$225 for ANHC members.
Karen Refredi specializes in porcupine quill work and beading pieces of art and jewlery. In this class, create a pair of Athabascan beaded gloves. Available for 2 optional university credits for an additional fee of $89.
Aleut Basket Weaving with Sharon Kay
(Maximum class size: 15)January 29 through February 1, 2008, 6 to 9 p.m.
February 2, 2008, noon to 4 p.m.

February 9, 2008, noon to 4 p.m.
Cost $225/ $200 for ANHC members.
Sharon Kay’s baskets are in the collections of a number of museums. She will use raffia to teach the ancient art of Aleut grass basket weaving, considered among the finest hand-weaving in the world.

Painting with Athabascan artist James Grant
(Maximum class size: 13)
March 25 through 28, 2008, 6 to 9 p.m.
March 29, noon to 4 p.m.
April 1 through 4, 6 to 9 p.m.
April 5, noon to 4 p.m.
Cost: $225/ $200 for ANHC members.
James Grant of Fairbanks has a degree in fine arts and Alaska Native studies from the University of Alaska. He has a number of works in the 1% for Art program, and has been chosen as an artist for the new downtown Anchorage Dena’ina Convention Center. Participants will learn painting with Athabascan designs.
Available for 2 optional university credits for an additional fee of $89.
To register and guarantee a space in the class, payment must be received in full. ANHC members receive a 10% discount off of class prices. To obtain a full refund, participants must withdraw two weeks prior to the start of class. Within two weeks of the start of class a 50% refund will be given. Within 24 hours no refunds will be given.

University Credit: Available for 2 optional university credits for an additional fee of $89.Students can register for university credit the first night of each class. Pre-registration is required with ANHC prior to the first night of class. Heritage Center fess must be paid in full before the class begins. UAA fees can be paid the first night of each class.
