The Alaska Native Heritage Center proudly presents its schedule of 2007-08 Native art classes. ANHC is able to offer these classes at affordable prices thanks to generous donations and grants from ExxonMobil and the US Department of Education.
Native Art Classes
The instructor of these two classes, ANHC’s Arts Coordinator, Beckie Etukeok, has a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, with a specialty in jewelry.
Drum-making
October 30 to November 3, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Make 12 inch diameter elk hide drum and drum stick. $75 per drum/$70 for members.
Available for optional 1 credit 500-level class, $69
Native Art Survey Class
January 15 to 19th, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Learn about the basics of Alaska Native Arts. Topics include materials, environment, culture and how they interact with each other. Students will construct a three inch model of a hand drum. $20.00 material cost.
Available for optional 1 credit 500-level class, $69.
Celebrating Culture Saturday Art Classes
On 16 Saturdays during the winter, ANHC offers art classes for aspiring artists, ages 14 and above. Each class consists of three or four sessions on successive Saturdays. Serious art students should plan to attend all sessions.
Andrew Abyo – Tool Carving (Sugpiaq)
October 27, November 3 and 10 - noon to 3 p.m. each Saturday $35 per project/$30 for ANHC members.
Geared toward the hunter, class participants will make a seal retriever or harpoon.
Karen Rifredi - Quillwork (Athabascan)
November 3 and 10, January 19 and 26: Noon to 3 p.m. each Saturday $50 per project/$45 for ANHC members.
Learn to harvest, clean and sew with porcupine quills.
Make and Take Art Workshops
December 8, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. $15 per project/$10 for ANHC members A variety of small art projects for the holidays, designed to be finished in a day:

February 2, 9, and 16, Noon to 4 p.m. each Saturday $50 per bag, / $45 for ANHC members.
Beaded, felt bag traditionally used by both Athabascan and Tlingit cultures.
Beckie Etukeok (Tlingit/Inupiaq) Drum-Making Workshop (Multi-Culture)
February 23, March 1 and 8: $85 per drum/$75 for ANHC members, noon to 4 p.m. each Saturday.
Make a Ceconite (aircraft fabric) drum. Designed for the beginner.
Percy Avugiak - Wood Carving Workshop (Yup’ik)
March 22, 29, April 5 and 12, Noon to 3 p.m. each Saturday $45 per project/$40 for ANHC members.
A variety of wood carving techniques in the Yup’ik tradition.
Registration
Space is limited in all classes. To register and guarantee a space in one of our classes, registration must be paid in full. To obtain a full refund, participants must withdraw two weeks prior to the start of class. Within two weeks of the start of class a 50% refund will be given. Within 24 hours no refunds will be given. ANHC members receive a 10% discount. Register by peaking with our Scheduling Clerk at 330-8000. ANHC accepts credit cards, cash, or checks.
Registration for optional university credit will occur at the first meeting of each class. Participants who have pre-registered through the Anchorage School District’s My Learning Plan ARE NOT AUTOMATICALLY REGISTERED FOR THE ANHC ART CLASS. ANHC fees must be paid in full directly to ANHC in order to ensure a space in the class.
Please make other arrangements for the care of young children.
ANHC will not be able to offer activities or care for children while their parents or older siblings attend art classes. Please make other arrangements for their care.
