In the Hall of Cultures -

“Native Ways In Changing Times

How do people maintain their cultural identities in the midst of great political, cultural, and environmental change?  Lisa Williams used her camera to explore this question in the Kenai Peninsula Alutiiq communities of Nanwalek and Port Graham between 2004 and 2008.  The result is an intimate portrait of contemporary Alaska Native life.  Thirty-five black and white images illustrate the fishing, marine harvesting, food sharing, and spiritual practices that tie community members together.  Quotes from community members interpret the photos.  Williams is a photographer with an MA in social documentation from Sonoma State University.  Her work in Alutiiq communities was funded in part by the Alaska Humanities Forum, and can also be seen in the Port Graham Native Cultural Center. Her photographs will be featured in the upcoming book Imam Cimiucia; Our Changing Sea, by Anne Solomon and the people of Nanwalek and Port Graham.”
