The Alaska Native Heritage Center presents an exciting offering of cultural programming all year long.  Mark your calendars and plan to attend!

January 23, 2010 - Native Theatre Festival  10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Alaska’s Native Theatre hits the Big Time with the Alaska Native Heritage Center’s first annual Native Theatre Festival, a vibrant celebration of stories and the many ways we tell them.

This day-long program features Native Theatre in its many forms – from the ancient stories woven by traditional storytellers to the contemporary interpretations and cutting-edge themes of stage productions. Join us and marvel at the diverse range of storytellers, dancers and musicians that makes up Native theatre today.

  • Drama ... Wings of Night Sky, Wings of Morning Light- Joy Harjo combines character-driven narrative with tales inspired by the traditions of her people—and takes a few turns blowing a mean jazz saxophone. An allegorical work of tremendous power, Wings demonstrates how theater and art can bring life full circle.

  • Comedy … hold on to your seats for a wild, roller-coaster ride with the hilarious hit of the season, Raven’s Radio Hour – the real one hour version!

  • Dance ... Ancient practices come alive as Yup'ik and Sugpiaq masks are danced for the first time.

  • Collaboration …  Celebrate – Song, Dance and Story! a presentation of the ECHO Performing Arts Festival production representing the indigenous cultures of Alaska, Hawai`i, Mississippi and Massachusetts. Under the direction of Tau Dance Theater of Honolulu, Hawai`i, the artists have created a performance piece infused with the oral tradition, dance and music of all of their regions.  This year’s theme focuses on the importance of oral tradition through storytelling, songs and dance and how each have provided physical, spiritual and mental health to each culture since time immemorial. • Films ... in the Theater throughout the day
