Celebrating Alaska Native and Native American Heritage Month

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The Alaska Native Heritage Center (ANHC) and Outside Interactive, Inc. are partnering in a first-ever collaboration celebrating Alaska Native and Native American Heritage Month with a free event at the ANHC with special support from The North Face. The event,   Honoring Indigenous Wisdom and Heritage: A Day of Celebration with Quannah Chasinghorse, will take place on Saturday, Nov. 11 from noon to 5p.m. at the ANHC at 8800 Heritage Center Drive, Anchorage, AK, 99504.

The event will feature an  Outside Magazine cover signing with Hän Gwich’in and Sicangu Oglala Lakota model and activist Quannah Chasinghorse, a free screening of “Walking Two Worlds” presented by The North Face, a Q&A session after the screening, Indigenous dance group performances, food trucks, giveaways and more.

"We're incredibly proud to feature Quannah on the cover of Outside Magazine, acknowledging the importance of highlighting such a strong Native woman," said April Morlock, Outside’s Director of Integrated Marketing. "Our partnership with the Alaska Native Heritage Center to celebrate Quannah, her dedicated activism and the wealth of Indigenous wisdom found here in the Alaska Native community is a privilege and honor that truly excites us."

The ANHC will also welcome home the infamous Fishcamp Barbie, complete with a Fishcamp Barbie photo booth for guests to partake in. Fishcamp Barbie is dressed in a hot pink qaspeq adorned with a beaded necklace, moosehide cuffs and a headband, and is positioned by a table made from salmon skin and beadwork. First created by mother-daughter duo Angela and Ermelina Gonzalez, Fishcamp Barbie was donated to the ANHC to be sold at a fundraiser. After going viral on social media, Fish Camp Barbie was returned via donation by Adam and Ingrid Gibbons to be permanently displayed at the ANHC. ANHC is extremely grateful to all who have helped to bring Fishcamp Barbie to the ANHC and our community.

“Fishcamp Barbie is the epitome of the beauty in representation, creativity, and the elevation of our unique Alaska Native ways of life,” shared Emily Edenshaw, president and CEO of the ANHC. “We are ecstatic to welcome Fishcamp Barbie to a permanent home at the ANHC where we can continue to create space to share Alaska Native traditions, arts and languages for generations to come.”
This event is hosted by the ANHC and Outside Magazine and is made possible with support from The North Face.
