Mission Moment
Natural Dyes Workshop
At the Alaska Native Heritage Center, learning is rooted in practice, connection, and the sharing of knowledge across generations. Through artist-led workshops ANHC creates space for emerging and established artists to learn directly from culture bearers and master artists, strengthening creative pathways for the next generation of Indigenous artists.
This commitment was reflected in a recent Traditional Dyes and Embroidery workshop, led by Sápmi artists Hilde Hauan Johnsen and Britta Marakatt-Labba, which brought together participants for hands-on learning, experimentation, and cultural exchange centered on plant-based dyes and embroidery techniques.
Reflecting on the experience, Master Artist Program Coordinator Clover Snelling (Łingit) shared, “It was an amazing experience of connection and cultural exchange, and such a privilege to be among so many incredible artists.” Participants gathered plant materials and experimented with colors and fabrics, discovering shared knowledge across regions. As Clover noted, “Even with the many differences between Alaska and Sápmi, we realized how much we share in our ecosystems and how plants are used.”
The embroidery portion of the workshop encouraged creative freedom and personal expression. Clover reflected that Britta “let everyone create however they felt,” resulting in a wide range of textures, colors, and finished pieces. The experience was further deepened through shared stories and reflection, creating a sense of connection across cultures and generations.
Workshops like this are a core part of ANHC’s mission to support artists, foster cultural exchange, and ensure Indigenous art practices continue to thrive. By hosting accessible, hands-on learning opportunities, ANHC helps nurture the next generation of artists while honoring the knowledge that comes before them.
ANHC's mission-driven work is dedicated to preserving and strengthening the traditions, languages, and arts of Alaska’s Native Peoples through statewide collaboration, celebration, and education. We are honored to continue creating space for learning, creativity, and connection.
