Learn how to create gut bags using the waterproof stitch with Master Artist June Pardue! This free, hands-on workshop takes place on Friday, November 7 and Saturday, November 8, 2025, at the Alaska Native Heritage Center in the Mabel Pike Games Classroom. 

ABOUT THE ARTIST

June (Simeonoff) Pardue, a Sugpiaq and Inupiaq artist from Old Harbor Village on Kodiak Island, has spent more than fifty years carrying forward the traditions of Sugpiaq Alutiiq grass weaving, fish skin tanning, and beadwork.

Her baskets, beaded headdresses, jewelry, and garments are held in museum collections including the Alutiiq Museum, Sheldon Jackson Museum, and the Autry National Center. Over the years, she has shared her skills across Alaska and internationally, teaching at the Smithsonian and the Hermitage Museum in Russia. Today, she inspires students and communities as a Professor of Native Arts at the University of Alaska Anchorage through teaching and workshops. Guided by the values of her parents, June lives by the motto: “Remain teachable; we don’t know everything and there is something to learn every day.”

To apply for this workshop, participants must complete the application form. Applications must be submitted no later than Wednesday, November 5 at 12PM to be considered for the class. Applicants must agree to attend the full duration of the 2-day workshop.

All applicants will receive an email by Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at 5PM notifying them whether they have been accepted to participate. Only those who receive acceptance emails may attend the workshop.

Frequently Asked Questions

If an accepted participant cancels their registration, they will be ineligible to participate in the next two workshops at the Alaska Native Heritage Center. Multiple cancellations or no-shows may result in extended ineligibility for future workshops. This policy helps ensure committed attendance and fairness for others wishing to join future events.

  • Alaska Native peoples are given priority for workshop participation.

  • Those from the same cultural background or region as the Mentor/Master Artist may also receive priority when applicable.

  • Individuals who have not participated in a workshop in the last 3–6 months have increased eligibility for selection

Participants are expected to arrive on time. If you're 15 minutes or more late, entry may be restricted to minimize disruption, and your seat may be filled from the waitlist.

Participants must be at least 16 years old to register for this workshop.

Participants will learn how to do the waterproof stitch and work with gut to create small gut pouches.
