DETAILS

Come learn how to make Yup’ik dance breastplates with Yup’ik artist Golga Oscar! This free, hands-on workshop takes place from October 15–18, meeting each day. Participants will learn how to create calfskin breastplates as part of their regalia.

This workshop is made possible through support provided by Providence Alaska Foundation and in partnership with Kuskokwim Campus Native Arts Department UAF.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Golga Oscar was born and raised in Kasigluk, Alaska. Oscar graduated from Institute of American Indian Arts where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Arts with an emphasis in photography.

As a fluent Yup'ik speaker, Oscar is dedicated to keeping his culture and traditions alive and relevant by teaching the next generations about their language and art. A strong cultural identity is evident in his work. Through his knowledge of traditional art forms and sewing skills, he creates cultural attire that becomes a strong visual element in his photographic imagery. His images portray portraits of Indigenous people to show the world the importance of Native heritage and the validity of their existence.
